Garage Re-Roof on Mill Road, Hethersett

We took on a full garage re-roof on Mill Road in Hethersett, just outside Norwich. The garage still had its original asbestos roof, which was well past its best and needed to go.

Old asbestos roofs are common on garages across Norfolk, and while they’re safe when left undisturbed, they become a problem once they start to crack and degrade. Removal needs to be done carefully and disposed of correctly. Once it’s gone, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to fit a proper tiled roof that will last for generations.

That’s exactly what we did here.

What the Job Involved

We started by safely stripping the old asbestos sheets, handling and disposing of them in line with the correct procedures. With the old roof gone, we had a clean structure to work from.

The new roof was then built up properly from the timbers out:

  • New felt and treated battens, giving the roof a modern, weathertight underlay and a solid, rot-resistant fixing base for the tiles.
  • Brand new clay tiles across the whole roof. Clay is a proper long-term material. It holds its colour, handles the Norfolk weather and gives the garage a finish that matches the character of the area.
  • New ridge tiles along the top, bedded securely for a clean, watertight line.
  • Cemented verges on the edges, sealing the roofline and locking the end tiles firmly in place.
  • Eaves trays fitted at the bottom of the roof. These protect the felt at its most vulnerable point and carry any water that gets under the tiles safely into the gutter.
  • Bird comb installed along the eaves, closing off the gaps under the bottom row of tiles so birds can’t get in and nest in the roof space.

Why it Matters

Swapping an old asbestos roof for felt, batten and clay tile isn’t just about looks. It removes an ageing material from the property, brings the garage up to modern standards and adds genuine value. The eaves trays and bird comb are small details, but they’re the difference between a roof that just looks good and one that performs properly for decades.

The Result

The garage now has a smart clay tiled roof that looks right at home in Hethersett and will comfortably outlast the old asbestos sheets it replaced. Watertight, bird-proof and built to last.

All waste, including the asbestos, was removed from site and disposed of correctly before our team of roofers left.
